Description
Pilots of the two atomic bomb missions. Colonel Paul Tibbets (centre) shakes hands with Major Charles Sweeney (left) shortly before the second atomic bomb mission. Tibbets was the pilot of the B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay which dropped the first atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6 August 1945. Sweeney was the pilot of the B-29 Bockscar which dropped the second atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki on 9 August 1945. The man at right is Captain James Van Pelt, navigator for the Nagasaki mission. These two bombs resulted in over 240,000 dead in the two cities, but ended the fighting in the Far East in World War Two.
