Description
Baron von Richthofen's crashed aeroplane, 1918. Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (1892-1918) was one of the best known German fighter pilots during the First World War. By 1918, he was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and was regarded with great respect by the Allies. The bright red paint on one of his aeroplanes earned him the name of Red Baron. Richthofen was shot down in a Fokker Triplane and killed near Amiens on 21 April 1918. Also seen here are the two Spandau machine guns from his plane. The wreckage was salvaged by members of 3 Squadron Australian Flying Corps, who buried Richthofen at Bertangles Communal Cemetery. Photographed at Bertangles, France, on 22 April 1918.
